Most parents of young children are travel wimps with good reason. By the time vacations begin we're exhausted, the children are over excited and all we want is to be beamed into the perfect holiday destination.
And that's the problem - getting there: early morning drives to the airport; queues at every stage of check in and then the remorseless misery of sitting in a cattle pen while fellow passengers take their frustration out on your squiggling children.
There are no easy answers unless you can afford your own Lear jet. But there are some strategies, outlined in the eight following features, to make air journeys bearable:
1. Mothers who drug their babies on flights - colleague Emma Mahony outlines the extremes some parents take to keep their children quiet, and themselves sane, while travelling. A very well-read feature
2. Surviving the airport with baby - special facilities for small children are one of the tips - Chloe Bryan-Brown reveals how to make airports bearable
3. Travelling with baby: the lowdown - is there an art to taking a baby on holiday? We answer the most frequently asked questions.
4. Travelling China - with a baby - a word of warning from weary long-haul parents
5. Ask our experts: is Ryanair the least family friendly airline? - a word of warning about some bargain airlines and their policy to children
6. A great pre-boarding swindle - paying less for budget flights can end up costing families more in stress says family expert Emma Mahony
7. Will airport security allow formula milk on planes - a straightforward but crucial question for families with babes. And another question answered by our experts - airport security and pregnancy: do scanners put the unborn at risk?
8. Six of the Best travel toys - every form of entertainment to keep the kids quiet on the way to and from the airport as well as in the air.
9. Travelling long-haul with a baby - Eric and Elaine Chapman don't want to change the way they travel just because they have a new baby - outr our expert responds
10. The best baby travel websites - and finally, the websites with a mass of baby travel help

One further comment--my mother didn't believe in traveling with very small children. Her lower age limit was eight, and she put off travel until I reached that age. Today, people bring tiny ones, and that is perhaps not such a good idea. If an infant's ears hurt, it screams.

As a New Zealander who is a hardened long haul traveller I'd like to offer my opinion. I've noticed that if the parents have good skills, the children aren't a problem. But do consider that very long flights (12 hours or more) are really tough on small children. I've seen even the best behaved children completely go to pieces after a 13 or 14 hour flight, especially when facing delays at an airport - and who can wonder? They really are pushed to the limits of their endurance. While standing in an hour-long queue after a 13 hour flight and witnessing distraught children and some really serious tantrums, it's hard not to think that people should not put their children through that unless there is a good reason.

Why are you even reading this article, HD? To post patronising remarks about your niece?
Like Jenn, I have to "inflict" my two sons on others if they are to see their grandparents. They are seasoned travellers and no trouble to anyone.
The British attitude that kids are a problem to be kept out of society if possible is exrtremely offensive.

Jane Knight's comment about the Caribbean's "ridiculous time difference" cannot go unchallenged. Is Jane aware that Dubai and Barbados at the moment both have a difference of 4 hours from the UK ?
DE, Bedford,
I wish I could wait until my daughter was older before I flew with her, but if I want her grandparents and other family members to see her before she's 5, we have no choice but to fly.
Some good articles here for those of us who need to fly with kids, and will do things "within reason" to keep them from bothering other travelers.

Oh dear.I like babies and toddlers(within reason,at a distance, etc.)but my heart truly sinks when I see them getting into seats near me.I do feel sorry for the parents. It must be hell.(My niece won't travel by air until her child is older. She says she won't inflict littly on everyone.Sensible girl!)
