Rafael Benítez has turned to Tom Hicks for support as he struggles to revive his bid to sign Gareth Barry from Aston Villa. The Liverpool manager still hopes to sell Xabi Alonso and to recruit Barry, whom he has pursued since April, but continuing tensions behind the scenes at Anfield have led him to bypass Rick Parry, the chief executive, and go directly to Hicks, once his fiercest adversary, in the hope of finding a breakthrough.
BenÍtez briefly considered resigning after Hicks and George Gillett Jr, the co-owners, vetoed an earlier agreement with Villa over an £18 million deal for Barry. The manager’s long-term future remains precarious unless he can reach an understanding with Parry and the owners over a transfer strategy, but, as he refuses to give up on Barry, BenÍtez has pleaded with Hicks to support him in his pursuit of the England midfield player.
Alarmingly for BenÍtez, perhaps, Hicks and Gillett, having been at odds with each other for much of their 18-month tenure at Anfield, now appear to be united on this and certain other matters – a development that some at the club believe to be a short-term marriage of convenience as they look to secure their asset before resurrecting plans to sell.
BenÍtez has identified Hicks as his most likely ally in the continuing power struggle. “I was talking to Tom Hicks and he told me we have the money,” BenÍtez said after his team opened their Barclays Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win away to Sunderland on Saturday. “I was in contact with one of the owners [Hicks]. He was answering me. He was clear that we had some money and that, if we sell some players, we can buy some.”
In order to finance a renewed bid for Barry, whom the owners consider overpriced, BenÍtez is prepared to sell Alonso, even though the Spain midfield player’s market value may have dropped since his participation in a Champions League qualifying match away to Standard Liège last week, which rendered him ineligible to play for another team in the competition. BenÍtez is also prepared to sell Steve Finnan, Jermaine Pennant, who is attracting strong interest from Blackburn Rovers, and Andriy Voronin, the Ukraine forward.
Alonso impressed as a substitute against Sunderland, but BenÍtez still plans to sell him, although neither Arsenal nor Juventus are willing to match BenÍtez’s valuation, which remains in the region of £16 million.

I really hope Rafa does'nt make the mistake of signing Barry. It would be a massive, massive mistake. At a time when money is short, not just at LFC, why waste so much on a player lacking any technical or creative ability. I don't think the mancs would worry about facing a team with Barry !
Nasser Hussain, London, UK
Has everybody overlooked the fact that Barry set his own deadline for any move at 3pm last Sunday,by which time if a deal was not done he would definately stay at Villa with no further negotiations.
I am sure Martin O'Neill will be reminding of his statement and ensuring that he stays.
Anton, Poole,
Dear Richard from Jersey.
The thing you are missing is that Villa don't want to sell Barry.
You right that he now holds less value to all teams competing in Europe bar Villa. But the price is still £18m. The situation with Alonso is different. Liverpool do want to sell him. Thanks.
Ash, Newcastle upon Tyne,
And Liverpool is a top 4 club, exactly why is that?
They have shown that they do not value Barry, do not respect and recognise the value of Alonso and Benitez is beginning to show tactical naivety.
Anyway, I hope we keep and that h stays, it should be clear to him that L'pool do not value him.
Asif, Birmingham,
Am I missing something here? If Alonso's market value has sliiped because he is cup-tied, surely the same has to be said for Barry.
Richard, Jersey,
If we have the money please lets buy Barry. These americans and their new found ally Parry are making Rafa desperate. We dont have to sell Alonso he's been so good so far.
Why cant these people get the idea that we need a strong squad to mount a strong challenge.NO one should blame Rafa anymore .

I agree completely with Matt in Birmingam and share your anxiety but did you realise there's an important Premier League match being played on transfer deadline day...yes you've guessed it...Aston Villa versus Liverpool.
What dreadful timing!

In all honesty I'm counting the days, hours, minutes and seconds 'til midnight on the 1st of September. Only then will I be able to relax that we've managed to keep hold of Barry. He showed yesterday exactly what he means to this football club.
£18m? Undervalued as far as I'm concerned.
Matt, Birmingham, UK
Yes maybe we have to sell players, agreed. But NOT Xabi.
Voronin, Pennant, Itandje, [Finnan] could and should all go before considering Xabi. Weve added one more RB and have Darby = finnan bye. ElZhar/Weijl & Saric are wide players = pennant bye. Voronin =Nemeth/Pacheco/Ngog, this is obvious stuff!
