The FA will contact Newcastle United after there was a repeat of tasteless chanting aimed at Mido, Middlesbrough’s Egypt striker, on Saturday. A small section of travelling supporters briefly sang: “Mido, he’s got a bomb”, a song that sparked a debate last season about the line between terrace banter and racism.

As they had done in August last year, Newcastle immediately condemned the fans who participated. “The club does not condone any sort of offensive chanting,” the club said. The FA said that it will engage the club in a campaign to educate supporters rather than seek official sanctions.

“We’ll speak to the clubs,” the FA said. “This will most likely involve working with the club \ to try to prevent it happening again. The police may also be involved.”

Gareth Southgate, the Middlesbrough manager, said: “We have to rise above it. If people want to shout those things, then it is more a reflection on them.”
