Darren Anderton, the former England international currently playing for AFC Bournemouth in League Two, is to retire on Saturday.
Anderton, 36, who is best remembered for the 12 years he spent with Tottenham Hotspur between 1992 and 2004, said that he was no longer finding training enjoyable.
"I have enjoyed every minute I have spent at Bournemouth," he told the club's website. "But before it gets to the stage where I don't enjoy it any more, I want to call it a day. It's been a hard decision to make, but the lads are doing great and they will be absolutely fine.
"When I first came here, I thought it would be just for a year, so it has been fantastic to play so long.
"I was finding training hard work and rather than just slogging on and not enjoying it, I have decided to make this decision. Saturday will be a sad day for me and I hope I can finish with a win.
"I would like to thank all the supporters for the fantastic backing I have had since my first minute at the club."
Anderton's final game will be the visit of Chester City to Dean Court. He leaves with Bournemouth next to bottom in League Two, having only on Tuesday erased the 17-point penalty they started the season as a punishment for having gone into administration.

Darren has been a credit to our struggling club. His vision and passing are still as good as ever even though the legs may not be quite as willing
Bournemouth supporters should feel proud that such a great player decided to end his playing careen at their club
Martin Dawkins, Loughbororugh,
The FA and Football League have probably hastened Anderton's decision by imposing such draconian and disproportionate points penalties on a small club like Bournemouth. It is the players and supporters that suffer in these circumstances whilst the incompetent club administration continue to blunder
