Adil Rashid bowled Yorkshire back into the match, with career-best figures of 7-107, bamboozling Hampshire's batsmen as they collapsed from 157 for two to 198 for nine. Hampshire rallied to level the scores at the close and leave this relegation battle keenly poised.

Hampshire had been cruising towards a match-winning position at 157 for two in the 56th over and then fell off the side of a cliff. Michael Lumb and Sean Ervine were looking to up the rate. Lumb had charged and cover driven four off Rashid, who in his next over was lifted for six over cow by Ervine.

But the 20-year-old leg-spinner, operating from the Northern End, is not easily cowed and, varying his flight and pace better than he was earlier in the season, he had his revenge.

Lumb, sweeping, was given out caught at silly point and one took two as Chris Benham committed the cardinal sin of shouldering arms to a ball he had not read. It was Rashid's googly, perfectly pitched, and it thudded into Benham's pads to trap him leg-before.

The calls will grow for Rashid to be included on England's winter tour, but, great bowler that he may become, he is not ready yet. If he is taken as England's second spinner, he would be exposed if Monty Panesar were to be injured. Baffling Hampshire is one thing, baffling India another. Even Shane Warne struggled against India taking 43 wickets at an average of 47.18.

Ervine always sees attack as the best means of defence, but it did not work against David Wainwright, the 23-year-old left-arm spinner, who had him stumped through the gate on the charge in his first over.

If Rashid had little fortune before tea, he had still tested the batsmen and a mixture of skill and fortune brought him riches. Wet wickets that are scorched under a blazing sun are often favourable to spinners and though this was typically slow, there was turn and bounce.

Nic Pothas, fresh from his hundred at Canterbury last week, was livid to be given out caught silly point off Rashid sweeping and remained on one knee for some time.

The slide continued until David Balcolmbe and James Tomlinson swung merrily for a last wicket stand of 38. They had levelled the scores when Tomlinson was caught at leg-slip to give Rashid his first seven-wicket haul.

In the morning, Tomlinson had claimed two more wickets to take his third five wicket haul of what is already a golden season for him. He extended his lead at the top of the first division wicket-takers to 47 at an average of 26.12. Resuming on 206, Yorkshire were hurried out for 236 in less than 14 overs. Jacques Rudolph fell short of his century, edging Christ Tremlett behind after spending nearly five hours compiling 89 off 197 balls.
