Julian Foddy, 36, is a mature student taking a digital entertainment degree at the University of Derby. Even before completing his studies he was asked to work on three films, including the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight.

He also worked on the Dunkirk scene in Atonement, which stars Keira Knightley.

Mr Foddy said: “I spent 14 years working as a professional DJ. I’d only had an interest in playing computer games and had never done anything like this before. But I could see the downturn in the UK club scene.”

He added that a computer gaming degree would set students up for a range of possible careers, including architecture and advertising.

“The degree gives you the necessary skills. You definitely need expert guidance – it’s not something you could teach yourself,” Mr Foddy said.
